Joseph Petrosino

(In America lo ricordano con ammirazione e affetto. In Italia...meglio non disturbare la mafia).

The 100th anniversary of the assassination of Lt. Joseph Petrosino, a NYC detective who was the head of the organized crime task force for the NYC police force at the beginning of the 20th century.

On March 12, 1909, he was assassinated in Palermo while investigating the Mafia there. His funeral procession in NYC on April 12 of that year was seen by 250,000 New Yorkers. This city declared that day a holiday so people could participate. He was a very heroic and colorful figure with connections to Caruso and Theodore Roosevelt. He warned the Secret Service of the impending assassination of McKinley.
There is a lot on the Web including a video. The video has interviews with Italians and shows actual film footage of the funeral procession. Go to www.italophiles.com/petrosino.htm.
